Haitian Immigrants

In the Dominican Republic there is an issue that has been going on for a really long time now and I’d like the entire world to be aware of it. Some people are eligible for citizenship in the Dominican Republic once they have turned 18 years old. The problem is that Dominican Republic has been deporting 20,000 undocumented residents that have haitian roots, so children and people whee they saw their first home at the Dominican Republic may be taken away from their properties and all they have. A lot of Dominican citizens support this cause because they say that its unfair for their country to be taking care of all the haitians, mean while they are a poor country too and they have take care of all their problems.

This issue has been constant with Dominicans and haitians, meaning that they have presented a type of rivalry towards each other. A long time ago a Dominican dictator named Rafael Leonidas Trujillo send troops to assassinate all the haitians that were found in dominican territory. This was known as “Masacre del perejil”.

Last year, Haitians reacted back towards Dominicans by saying that Dominican Republic was a racist country started a protest, they also burned the flag in order to get attention and really show how they felt like. The banners they used in the protest had messages that said thing like “No to violence”, you can also see pictures of a haitian citizen that was hanged in a tree in the Dominican Republic as a representation of the violence. Another similar situation that has caused a lot of negative impact is in the frontier between the two countries, there we can notice that exists a lot of tension. All of these situations give me a lot of pity, I wish that one day these two amazing countries can understand that having each others backs can actually be beneficial for them both.
