The role of a government should be to maintain order and ensure that all people living under its rule are being taken care of. Government should always keep their people’s best interests in mind and never compromise its morals for any outside factor, whether it be money or more power.
The United States is notorious for having the “ideal” capitalist, democratic, government. So notorious that it spreads its ideals to countries around the world without thinking about the country’s culture or people. In theory, everyone in the United States has an equal say in the government so that the government will always have the people’s best interests in mind. The role of the government is supposed to be to regulate the market so it doesn’t get too powerful and to provide people with basic necessities and rights. The pride that comes with being a U.S. citizen also comes with a level of ignorance. An ignorance that isn’t completely voluntary. By submitting to the United States government, you are giving up some of your freedoms and you have to acknowledge that the government isn’t going to disclose all of the information about what they are doing. Because of the immense free market with very limited regulations, it very powerful. So powerful that I would argue that it has more power than the United States government. The United States’ “ideal” capitalist government is a cover for its neoliberalist tendencies. Neoliberalism is the economic system in which all means of production are private and where the government’s only real role in society is to ensure that no monopolies are formed.
Corporations have so much purchasing power that they can indirectly purchase laws and regulations. They hire people called lobbyists to go to congress and bribe congressmen to not pass laws that would limit their ability to make capital. Most of the laws that lobbyists stopped the government from passing would have benefited the people. One industry that has a lot of power in the United States is the meat industry. It is a multi-billion dollar industry that can afford to pay lobbyists millions of dollars a year so that congress can place less regulations on their products. The meat industry exploits their customers and sells them food that has been pumped with chemicals These chemicals help animals grow faster and larger, which helps the companies make more money off of their animals at a much faster rate. These chemicals cause horrible illnesses like cancer in the people who eat the meat. If the government really had the people’s best interests in mind, they wouldn’t take bribes from these big companies and they would pass laws that helped the people living in the country who voted for them. Societies run by the market can’t function because the market never keeps the people’s best interests in mind. It creates a society run by money and it keeps only those with money in power.
The U.S. government needs to increase transparency in their budgets, spending and sources of income. This would help alleviate the temptation of congressmen and lawmakers to accept bribes from large corporations. If the people saw that congress people were making an extra few million dollars on the side from private companies, they would do something about it and vote for other people to represent them in government. The U.S. government should also place more strict regulations on the market to restrict the amount of power it has. The role of the government should be to protect the people and ensure that they are living with a certain level of comfort, safety and health. The United States government isn’t living up to these standards.
